As we continue to explore some “bonus features” of the story of David, Sunday’s message looks to David as a leader of men. David had several areas in his life where he struck out, but when it came to connecting and calling up men…he was the homerun king. He had the ability to draw out their best. He could inspire the “down on their luck, losers, vagrants and misfits” (1 Samuel 22:2 Message Bible) and mentor them to be “mighty warriors” (1 Chron 11:10). He even made the topic of manhood one of the final charges he gave to his son Solomon (1 Kings 2:2). To define biblical manhood, we’ll turn over to a charge given by the Apostle Paul to see an authentic blueprint to be a man.

As we are winding down our David study (two more to go), we are in the fourth and final chapter which highlights some bonus features behind David’s life. The last two weeks we surveyed David as a Psalmist and David as a family man, this Sunday is about a particular description offered as an epitaph for David’s life. Acts 13:36 records that David served God’s purpose in his generation and then he died. There are some very instructive details in that simple epitaph. And if David, with all his flaws, could find and serve a purpose in his generation then there is no reason that each of us, with the empowerment of Christ, can’t find some meaningful and purposeful ways to live.

This week we are going to look at the darkest moment in David’s life. A lesson from David’s life about being a promise keeper. The story of Absalom’s betrayal in 2 Samuel ranks as the most elaborate and extensively narrated political event in the Bible, complete with a host of scandalous events: illicit sex, murder, cover-up, petty crime, incest, fratricide, conspiracy theories, treachery, sibling rivalry, false witness, theatrical performances, pyromania, suicide, secret agents, hangings, and a massive civil war. But the story also reveals a biblical pathway for how to walk out betrayal, disappointment, brokenness and failure in a manner worth emulating. While it is David’s lowest moment, it also reveals how he recalibrated and went forward with God’s favor. Our tendency when situations like that occur to us is to lash back out, rest in righteous indignation, or simply be angry.

This week we make turn into Chapter 3 of David’s storyline, his years spent as the leader of the nation of Israel (1 Samuel 31-2 Samuel 5 and/or 1 Chron 10 – 11). We’ll examine the chaos and uncertainty in the aftermath of king Saul’s death. The question of the day was, “who should be king?” Seems like an easy question for us to answer but there was a divided nation – half the people in favor of David, half in favor of Saul’s son Ishbosheth. During these years of uncertainty there two kings with a split kingdom and civil wars. Patiently waiting on the Lord, David proved in time that he was the one person to lead one nation (2 Samuel 5:1-5). So the question of who should be king is clearly answered. But there is a deeper question we all need to ask and answer.

Our study in David’s life continues this weekend with the final message in chapter 2 which covers David’s life on the run. His fugitive days are blanketed with lots of sketchy situations…not his personal best. But in the midst of a rough patch, David has a moment of brilliance. How he handles two opportunities (1 Samuel 24, 26) to get back at Saul reveals that he was a unique person who could show extraordinary trust and obedience in God. From his example we will lean in to process some lessons for how navigate our own life opportunities. How to know which ones are right…which are wrong, which ones are sent from God and which ones are dangled by the devil.

We start the next chapter in David’s story, which covers his years spent as a fugitive on the run from Saul. These are some of the darker and lesser known parts of David’s story. We will overview the chapters involved (1 Samuel 19-30) and look to glean seven specific life lessons that we can draw from when our own lives meltdown and go off the rails. This week wraps up chapter 1 of David’s early story by looking at the promotions he receives. We will uncover God’s heart for promotion – a pathway for greater opportunities, blessings, and influence. Moms are natural promoters for their children, they want the best for them. But there is no greater promoter than God. Psalm 113:7-8 proclaims: “He lifts the poor from the dust and the needy from the garbage dump. He sets them among princes, even the princes of his own people!” We will make some important observations of David’s example as someone who was promotable. We want to position ourselves to receive God’s promotions.

Our David+ series continues to look at some of the early influences in David’s life. This weekend we will focus on the impact of David’s close friendship with Jonathan. Certainly a proverb that Solomon (son and successor of David) composed reflects the profound effect of that friendship: “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” (Proverbs 27:15). The promise of that proverb is that our life can and should make others better. We will be inspired by the bond that David and Jonathan formed and pursue how we can better steward the influence God gives us in the lives of others.

David is one of the greatest persons in the Bible, he is revered as the greatest king of Israel. Even one of the last things Jesus said in Scripture affirmed David’s renown: “I am the root and offspring of David” Revelation 22:16. All that greatness relied on him having a heart that deeply trusted God. Psalm 56, written by David, echoes his developed trust in the Lord: “But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.” Notice that…I WILL PUT my trust in you. As we mentioned last week, David was recognized by the Lord by having a childlike wholehearted belief in God…but he had to train his heart to put his trust in the Lord. It’s possible, we can believe in God…but not trust Him! Stew on that. In two early events in David’s life, serving in Saul’s court and facing the giant Goliath, God trained David to put his trust in Him. From those stories, we will confront some of our own trust issues and invite the Lord to teach us to put our trust in Him through some of things we are facing right now.
