	Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video have changed the way we watch TV.  Now we can ‘binge’ all the episodes of our favorite shows in just a few days or over a weekend.  We love to know what happens next… we naturally want more of the story. Some shows are so captivating that we set them apart as “bingeworthy.” They are stories that instantly capture our attention and keep it until the storytelling is done.

	The Life of Jesus is truly Bingeworthy. As a church, we are setting aside several weeks to watch every episode of His extraordinary life and listen for what it would speak over our lives today.

	At the beginning of Holy Week, one of the things that Jesus assured His followers was that His life and mission would appear to fail but what was apparent wasn’t the authoritative version of what was taking place:  “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone.  But its death will produce many kernals – a plentiful harvest of new lives.” (John 12:24).  Jesus was casting a vision and purpose of His own sacrifice that would be an important example before the disciples of persevering through their own downturns.  The student is not greater than his teacher, all disciples of Jesus will have dips to go through and learning to persevere is one of the greatest assets we can acquire.

	Episode 1 focuses on the Perseverance of Jesus.  The Gospels describe Jesus’ resolve: “He gathered up his courage and steeled himself for the journey to Jerusalem.” (Luke 9:51, Message).  He needed that kind of steeled perseverance because Holy Week had a lot of “dips” – low points that Jesus had to get through.  He persevered.  Our goal is to learn from Jesus and strengthen our own perseverance in our own dips.  Hebrews 12:1-3 says it very well:  “And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.  We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.  Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame.  Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.  Think of the hostility he endured from sinful people, then you won’t become wary and give up.”  We all have people counting on us not to give up in life’s dips.  May we learn to persevere like Jesus.
