We are wrapping up the Sunday morning sermon series part of Defined tomorrow. As each of us have learned some new things about our identity, the ground we’ve taken back from the enemy will not be surrendered without a fight. So we will focus the last message in this series on the spiritual attacks (ironic, huh) that will certainly come against us. We will learn from 1 Peter 5:8-9 and Eph 6:10-14a how to stand firm and hold our ground.

This Sunday we will take one more look at one other aspect of our true identity – saint identity. This one is particularly challenging for a couple of reasons. One, nobody wants to think of themselves as a saint – “I know me and I’m anything but a saint.” Second, we often thing it means something along the lines of a really superstar Christian, a Hall of Famer – “I don’t qualify for the Christian Hall of Fame.” Yet God calls all who are saved…saints. In fact, it is one of the New Testament’s most often used descriptions for being a follower of Jesus – saint is used 67x. Hopefully we can clear up what it means to be a saint – someone who is set apart for something different. An important aspect of being set apart relates to doing something. Who we are comes before what we do; but saints do. We are not do nothings, we are do somethings! Repeatedly we run across this expectation for saints (Matthew 5:16; Ephesians 5:8; James 2:24). We will focus on a few things we all can do as saints.

Jesus came to earth with a particular anointing, a God given ability to set captives free (Luke 4:18-19). I think in many ways we’ve way underestimated the God’s ability to set us free. Many of us have allowed some reoccurring sin patterns to easily trip us up and hold us hostage (Hebrews 12:1). We are wantto affirm that the power of sin has been broken and we are no longer slaves to any sin(s) that has ruled over us. Romans 6:1-14 will serve as our guide to learn the truth about our freedom identity.

This week in our Defined study, we start to step into some of the features of being “created anew in Christ Jesus” (Eph 2:10) that impact our identity. This Sunday we will be looking at how the Scripture defines one of the truest things about followers of Jesus is that we are spiritually adopted into God’s family (Ephesians 1:3-6). Our adoption identity reveals that God wanted, pursued, and brought us into His family as adopted children. Our adoption has some pretty special implications: we have unique access and blessing along with the assurance that when God choses us, He choice comes with an enduring commitment to see us through all that we face in life. Our adoption identity is strong and something we need better understanding of.

Week 2 of Defined will look at a consequence of our sin, which is to waste life. Each and every person is “awesomely and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). We have been created on purpose, with a purpose. But those divine plans have suffered a setback. The purpose God had in mind for each awesome wonderful life He created has been wasted. So Christ stepped in. With personal sacrifice, Jesus has repurposed our lives. Our restored identity (adopted, co-heirs, saints, new creations, temples of the living God) is due to the willing sacrifice of Jesus (Romans 3:23-25).

We are excited this weekend to kick off our church wide discipleship study – Defined. This is a whole church takeover with children, students, college, small groups all focusing on learning more about our identity – who God says we are. We will begin this Sunday in Ephesians 2:8-10 learning about the gift of salvation, being created anew in Christ Jesus, and the masterpiece of our identity. This truth has never been more important. Today people are more confused about their identity than ever before. Our aim is to let God speak into this confusion and create clarity with the real truth about the real you.
